Katy Huie Harrison, PhD, is an author, mom, recurrent miscarriage survivor, & owner of Undefining Motherhood. She lives in Atlanta with her husband (affectionately known on the internet as "Husband,") son (Jack), and daughter (Branham). She believes our society puts too many expectations on women that make womanhood and motherhood restrictive. It’s the middle of the night, and you’re feeling so many emotions at the sound of your baby’s cry. Part of you is startled; another part is desperate to soothe those anxious cries; and let’s be honest, part of you wants to just pull the pillow over your head and cry yourself. We can’t make […]
As the seasons shift and a chill graces the air, October brings me back to one of the most bittersweet moments of the year: the International Wave of Light. This ceremony is an integral part of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and it holds a sacred space in my heart and in our community. […]
Let’s talk about maternity leggings, or as I call them, “my very best friends during pregnancy.” And trust me, they’re going to be yours, too. Whether you’re 6 weeks pregnant or heading into your final trimester, carrying a baby comes with a vast collection of, well, not so glamorous side effects. From hyperemesis to lightning crotch, most women experience at least one or two pregnancy symptoms that are less than enjoyable. Constipation while pregnant, for example, can be one of […]
There is a myth about parenthood. It goes something like this: You will be able to have children when (and only when) you want. Your experience having children will follow the pathway you choose for it. Your children will be healthy. Reality, as our community frequently notes, is quite different from the myth. Pregnancy loss […]
