Best Maternity Pajamas of 2023 (for Home and Hospital)

Pregnant woman reading and wearing maternity pajamas

When you’re pregnant, comfort is key. Weird things happen to pregnant bodies, and all mamas carrying babies want to feel as comfortable as possible. That, and we want to sleep while we can, and the right pair of comfy, cozy maternity pajamas can work wonders for helping keep us as rested as possible.

And we have a little secret to share with you, too! Shhh . . .

The best maternity pajamas can also double as postpartum pajamas and nursing pajamas

And if you like sleeping in leggings, choose some for the maternity period that will work as postpartum leggings, as well.

By choosing maternity sleepwear and loungewear that will see you through pregnancy and postpartum, you get way more bang for your buck. You can also buy nicer pajamas that will last and rest assured that  you won’t have to replace them when they get worn out.

We recommend having at least 4 pairs of maternity pajamas, but being able to mix and match to make more options will be helpful when you’re postpartum and being spit up on regularly.

What To Look For When Choosing Maternity Loungewear

People often ask why they can’t just buy bigger pajamas when pregnant, and here’s the answer. The best maternity pajamas will also support you through postpartum and nursing, if you choose to breastfeed

Also, maternity pajamas are sized to work with your growing belly (so you can buy your pre-baby size with no confusion), and they are typically made of stretchy materials so growth is comfortable.

AND, If you need belly support, you can also choose tighter pajamas with support included.

But the biggest benefit of buying maternity-specific pajamas is that you can also wear them comfortably in the hospital after giving birth, as well as during postpartum recovery

So choose soft, comfortable, cozy pajamas that are machine washable, and you’ll rest better both because you feel SO good, and because you know you don’t need to pajama shop for another year-and-a-half.

Best Maternity Pajama Set

Maternity pajama sets are amazing because you can wear them around outside of the bedroom. And during the postpartum period, you may just live in them all day, as well.

We highly recommend investing in some amazing maternity pajama sets–at least 2, more if you’re not a nightgown person.

1. Ekouaer 2-Piece Pajama Set

We love Ekouaer pajamas because they’re super comfy and the price is right. We do think it’s worth splurging on some maternity pajamas to make sure they last you through the postpartum period, but with Ekouaer, there’s no need to splurge.

This button-down top is soft, breathable, and so pretty. I could literally melt into the pants.

The lightweight fabric is great for warm climates; just make sure you wash it once before wearing to get to its peak softness!

2. STORQ 3-Piece Lounge Set

This lounge set is the ultimate in luxury maternity pajamas! You won’t believe the comfort of this soft, cotton/spandex blend that will stretch and grow with you both directions; as baby grows, and as new mama shrinks.

3-Piece Lounge Set

They’re machine washable, which is key, and the included robe is a great addition that will transition through the whole period with you.

3. Kindred Bravely Davy Maternity and Nursing Pajamas

I’m about to recommend two different Kindred Bravely sets, depending on whether you want loose-fitting or tighter pajamas.

These pajamas are loose and super comfy, and they can be put in the washer and dryer (an absolute must! You will have bodily fluids everywhere.)

The pants have a wide waistband that’s very stretchy, so they’re comfortable at every stage. Of course we love the pockets and easy pull-down for breastfeeding after baby arrives.

4. Kindred Bravely June Maternity and Nursing Pajamas

While lots of our readers prefer loose pajamas like the Davy ones, I’m personally more partial to a more fitted pajama. I enjoy the feel of pajamas that don’t move around in my sleep, and they feel more supportive in the waistline, which I loved during pregnancy and postpartum.

These pajamas are designed for warmer weather or pregnancy hot flashes (hence the capri pants and sleeveless top), but with a great robe thrown over top, I think they work year-round! Particularly if you’re a hot sleeper.

5. Pink Blush Camo Pocket Maternity Set

This pajama set is just too cute not to love! It’s basically sweats, but trendy, so you can wear them to bed or out for a casual day. We love that the cuffed ankle and sleeves hold everything in place, so it fits no matter what your height.

And our favorite part? Pockets, obviously! A front pocket AND pockets in the pants.

Maternity Sleepwear: Nightgowns you’ll love

I don’t know about you, but I love a nightgown. They’re so free flowing that I find them much more comfortable to sleep in than pajamas sets. To me, sets are for daytime; gowns are for sleeping.

If you’re with me on that one, you’ll love each of these maternity nightgowns. They’re soft, sturdy, and all come with amazing features!

Finding comfortable, pretty, and DURABLE maternity nightgowns that can withstand the postpartum period shouldn’t be hard. Here are our favorites.

1. Ekouaer Button-Down Night Shirt

We adore this nightgown for so many reasons. First, it’s cute, like cute enough that I’d pull up the sleeves and wear it on grocery run.

Second, it buttons up for easy nursing and has a chest pocket, making it easy for nursing and functional.

The breathable, stretchy fabric will keep you comfortable all night long and prevent overheating.

2. Kindred Bravely Eleanora Bamboo Nightgown

If you’ve ever worn anything bamboo, you know why we love these. Bamboo is an amazing fabric because it’s breathable and oh-so-soft. It’s also eco-friendly, which is great.

This nightgown converts perfectly to a nursing nightgown, and it is just all out amazing.

Oh, and the best part? It has POCKETS for pacifiers (for baby) and granola bars (for nursing mamas)! Enough said.

3. Undercover Mama House Dress

This gown is great for nighttime, or you can tie it up at the bottom and wear it out during the day. It has plenty of room for a growing belly but buttons down for nursing access after baby arrives.

We love this precious sleep dress because it’s cute, comfortable, versatile, AND has pockets. Basically all of our favorite things in one.

Don’t worry; you won’t really have to mess with all of those buttons. The top two unbutton for easy breastfeeding access after baby arrives; the rest are faux buttons for style.

Maternity Pajamas: robe sets for hospital & home

Robes are fantastic for pregnancy, the hospital, and postpartum. You can throw them on quickly, which can become essential once baby arrives. They’re great for hospital photo ops, and at any stage of pregnancy or new motherhood, you can use them to keep you warmer over lighter-weight pajamas, thus cutting down on the number you need to buy.

Here are our very favorite maternity robes; we know you’ll love them too!

1. Ekouaer Maternity Robe

This gorgeous, soft, comfortable robe is a favorite among our readers. It comes in a variety of colors and has an amazing price point.

It’s perfect over a growing bump and for comfort and nursing after birth. You’ll find just the right amount of stretchiness with its machine washable rayon fabric.

2. Storq Maternity & Delivery Robe

This gorgeous, ultra soft robe is perfect for pregnancy, postpartum, and the hospital.

Delivery Robe

With easy access to your breasts for feeding, arms for taking blood pressure, and perineum or c-section scar, what more could you, your baby, or your hospital nurse possibly ask for?

3. Kindred Bravely Emmaline Robe

We love that this robe is both comfortable and stylish, and that it’s made of modal fabric, which is perfect for pregnancy and postpartum. Originally developed in Japan in the 1950s, modal is a plant-based textile made from beech tree pulp, which makes it soft, luxurious, and eco-friendly.

We love that there are two different belt loops–one higher than the other, to work with your growing belly during pregnancy and shrinking one after birth. Oh, and did we mention deep pockets? The best of the best!

4. Pink Blush Floral Lace Trim Robe

Want to feel gorgeous, and have something to pack in your hospital bag for mom that will make photos amazing? Pink Blush is ALWAYS your go-to for stunning, photographable maternity wear that holds up and feels glorious.

This beautiful, lace-trimmed robe is a fan favorite, but it runs small, so order a size up!

Maternity Pjs: best delivery gowns

Bringing your own delivery gown is all the rage, and while I didn’t do it, I will if we have another baby. Knowing you’re in something clean and comfortable that still allows all the access doctors, midwives, and nurses will need, is never a bad idea.

Here are our favorites.

1. Kindred Bravely Universal Gown

This gown comes in multiple colors and has a velcro back that fully opens, so you can easily have an epidural if desired or needed. The velcro front fully opens, as well, allowing easy access for fetal monitoring, skin to skin time, and breastfeeding if you go that route.

We love Kindred Bravely’s products for their comfort and durability. They’re always high quality, and my closet was FULL of them during pregnancy and postpartum. And the best part: although it looks like a hospital gown, this gown feels like a t-shirt!

2. Ingrid & Isabel Maternity Hospital Gown

Thanks to its empire waist, this is undoubtedly the prettiest hospital gown we’ve found! It’s 100% cotton, super comfy, machine washable, and cute enough to transition into a regular house dress or nightgown if it’s not too gross after birth.

To use during labor and delivery, this gown has full back snaps for epidural access and shoulder snaps for easy skin to skin or nursing!

3. Gownies Labor and Delivery Hospital Gown

This beautiful gown comes in tons of different patterns, and if you want to go this far for photo purposes, can also be purchased with a matching pillow. It snaps down the front and back for easy access, and at the top for easy nursing access.

And did I mention it has great reviews? This company focuses specifically on labor and delivery gowns and maternity robes, so it’s no wonder mamas love them.

Choosing your Favorite Maternity PJs

When considering maternity pajamas, there are a few major factors to keep in mind:

  1. What fabrics do you like the best? I’m all about bamboo, but I also really love cotton and modal for maternity and postpartum pajamas.
  2. Is it machine washable? Sadly, not all the Pink Blush ones can go in the dryer, so know what you want/need and make sure you shop accordingly!
  3. Loose or fitted? I love the support you get from fitted maternity loungewear, but a lot of mamas love loose-fitting pajamas that move and grow with you without as obvious changes in fit.
  4. Will they hold up? Remember you want to stick to your budget, but also get nice enough pajamas to last you through childbirth and postpartum. While we tend to recommend going with inexpensive maternity clothes, it pays off to have nicer maternity pajamas.
  5. Do you hope to breastfeed? If so, choosing maternity pajamas that convert into nursing pajamas is key!

FAQs for Maternity Pajamas

Do you NEED maternity pajamas?

Maternity pajamas can be a comfortable and convenient option for pregnancy, and they transition well into postpartum and breastfeeding. Whether you need maternity specific pajamas depends on your comfort and sleeping preferences.

What is the best pajamas after giving birth?

The best pajamas after giving birth are comfortable, lightweight, breathable, and allow for easy access of skin-to-skin contact with baby and breastfeeding access if needed. We love the breathability and comfort of bamboo pajamas, like the Betsy bamboo nightgown from Kindred Bravely.

How many pairs of pajamas should a pregnant woman have?

We recommend having at least two pairs of maternity pajamas so it’s easy to keep a pair clean without breaking the bank.

How many times should you wear pajamas before washing?

We recommend washing your pajamas after every 2-3 wears, depending on your comfort level. Over-washing pajamas may result in them wearing out more quickly, and fabric can stiffen due to excess detergent.
